At that time, the youth Candraprabha addressed the Buddha, saying:
"It is rare, Bhagavān! The Tathāgata, Arhat, and Perfectly Enlightened One has quickly and skillfully expounded the equality of the nature of all dharmas. This teaching on the equality of the nature of all dharmas is what bodhisattvas should study. If bodhisattvas can cultivate and study the Samādhi taught here, they will quickly attain anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi. Bhagavān! I would also like to speak further. Tathāgata! I would also like to speak further. Sugata! I wish to say a few things."
The Buddha said:
"O Youth, speak as you wish."
At that time, the youth Candraprabha, with his palm with ten fingers joined together in front of the Buddha, stood facing the Buddha and praised the Buddha's true virtues with verses:
"Seeing birth oppressed by old age, sickness, and death,
Constantly deluded by greed, anger, and delusion,
The Buddha originally aroused bodhicitta,
Wishing to attain perfect awakening and liberate all bonds.
Sādhu! You have cultivated for immeasurable eons,
Abiding in generosity, gentle and guarding against faults,
Maintaining precepts, patience, and vigor,
Skillfully cultivating concentration and wisdom.
Without any expectations, you have abandoned the throne,
Wife, children, treasures, and all possessions,
Head, eyes, hands, and feet, as well as your life,
Your mind never wearying from the start.
Your precepts are pure and flawless,
Abandoning your body and life to always uphold them,
Skillfully restraining body, speech, and mind,
I pay homage to the Well-Gone One who tames the mind.
Abiding in the power of patience amidst the power of wisdom,
Even if someone gouges out your body, you have no anger,
With compassionate blood transformed into flowing milk,
I pay homage to the Tathāgata's wondrous and extraordinary qualities.
Accomplishing the powers and abiding in the ten powers,
With immeasurable wisdom discerning all dharmas,
The Buddha compassionately regards the world,
Saving and benefiting all those in different realms.
Already knowing all dharmas are empty in nature,
Seeing all worlds are completely false,
Awakening to the path and realizing one's nature is without self,
Knowing liberation is without anything to be liberated.
Far from afflictions and laxity,
Subduing Māra's forces and armies,
Knowing the unconditioned nature of space and unobstructed wisdom,
He speaks of the quiescent, unobstructed, and pure Dharma.
Even if the stars fall from the sky,
The earth, seas, and cities all perish,
The unconditioned nature of space may change,
But the Tathāgata's words will never be false.
Seeing suffering sentient beings,
Abiding in grasping and discrimination,
He shows them the way to be free from grasping and attachment,
That is, the profound and tranquil emptiness.
For inconceivable, countless eons,
The Great Hero has long since trained,
Having cultivated all without attachment,
Therefore the Buddha has no faults.
The Buddha's cultivation and learning of all dharmas,
As he has attained the Dharma, he explains it for others,
This is not the ground of foolish ordinary people,
Nor is it all the various non-Buddhists.
是名過失諸凡夫;
Their minds always abide in the concept of self,
This is called the fault of ordinary people;
If they can well know the Dharma of no-self,
There are no faults at all.
恒常安住於實法;
The great hero's true words,
Always abide in the true Dharma;
Abiding in such true Dharma,
He can also expound true words.
Having cultivated true practices in the past,
He can extol his original vows,
Attaining the true and wonderful recompense,
Therefore he can speak true words.
善能覺於真實際;
Possessing the true practices he cultivates,
He is well able to awaken to the reality limit;
Such true practices he cultivates,
I pay homage to the great wisdom of the Honored One among humans.
His wisdom is supreme and without equal,
His wisdom is complete and very radiant,
Ultimately reaching the supreme wisdom,
I pay homage to the one who speaks of wisdom.
He can be a friend to sentient beings,
Having cultivated compassion for a long time,
He is well able to abide peacefully and not move,
Like Mount Sumeru that does not move.
The teacher of devas and humans, endowed with extensive virtues,
Instructs the great assembly of sentient beings,
The Sugata, with profound and supreme wisdom,
Abides in the assembly without fear and roaring like a lion.
Such fearless lion's roar,
Like the lion king's majestic and fierce,
Subduing all the various non-Buddhists,
Like the lion defeating the jackal.
The great hero is well able to subdue the unruly,
Those who are tamed he also tames well,
Causing them to attain accomplishment as good friends,
Abiding firmly and not being destroyed.
Seeing the suffering of all sentient beings,
They rely on the view of self to the utmost,
He expounds the Dharma of no-self for them,
Without any love or hate.
They do not study with the foolish and ordinary people,
Who rely on dangerous and unwholesome paths,
But they reveal the true path for them,
Which is the path leading to nirvana.
If there is attachment to the idea of self,
They will dwell in extreme suffering,
Because they do not understand the Dharma of no-self,
Which can eliminate places of suffering.
大智久已曾修學;
For inconceivable numbers of eons,
The great wisdom has long been cultivated and trained in;
Having cultivated and left behind attachment,
Therefore there are no faults.
They expound the phrases of Dharma free from faults,
The Bhagavān is far removed from all faults,
Skillfully speaking true and subtle words,
His mouth can liberate a hundred kinds of fear.
Innumerable nayutas of hundreds of thousands of billions
Of devas, nāgas, and yakṣas dwell in space,
Delighting in the unsurpassed most noble Dharma,
Those who hear it all accord with true meaning.
The Tathāgata's joyful words are good and beautiful,
Soft and harmonious, timely and pleasing to the mind,
Harmonising innumerable subtle sounds,
Compassionately liberating countless people.
如來一音能映蔽;
A hundred thousand kinds of musical sounds
Simultaneously played in harmony,
Would all delight the devas,
But the Tathāgata's single sound surpasses them all;
於佛音聲非少分;
The various birds, such as the kalaviṅka,
Simultaneously emit subtle sounds,
Causing others to be joyful,
But that is not a fraction of the Buddha's sound;
於佛音聲悉不現;
The music that delights and arouses,
Well harmonising with all kinds of instruments,
Blowing conches, beating drums, playing flutes and zithers,
All do not appear in the Buddha's sound;
於佛音聲悉不現;
The singing and dancing of the kiṃnara king,
Already well trained in a hundred thousand kinds of music,
If heard, all are joyful,
But the Buddha's sound does not so appear;
於佛音聲悉不現;
The sounds of the kinnaras, parrots, and śārikas,
Peacocks, swans, and geese,
All the beautiful sounds of birds,
All do not appear in the Buddha's sound;
The beautiful and wonderful sounds that are delightful,
All the good songs in the world,
All gathered together and simultaneously emitted,
Would be surpassed by the Buddha's sound, which is most excellent;
The devas, yakṣas, and asura kings,
All the various kinds of beings in the three realms,
Among those with the most excellent and sublime bodies,
The Buddha emits a single light that outshines them all;
The Tathāgata's physical body is like a blooming flower,
Adorned with all the marks and minor marks,
Producing the fruits of blessings that are extremely pure,
Shining and illuminating the ten directions;
百分不及佛一音;
The sounds of bells, chimes, flutes, and harps,
The beautiful sounds of cymbals, gongs, and zithers,
All these sounds harmonised together,
Would not equal a hundredth of the Buddha's single sound;
The kiṃnara, asura, and mahoraga,
The beautiful sounds of the yakṣas,
And all the wonderful sounds in the three realms,
Would not equal a hundredth of the Buddha's.
The light of Brahmā and all the devas,
And the light of the devas of the highest heaven,
If the Bhagavān emits a single light,
The other lights are not even a hundredth.
His body, speech, and mind are all pure,
His pure giving is not tainted by the world,
The king among humans, a treasure of virtues,
His natural virtues are unequaled."
Having praised the Ten-Powered One with true words,
The youth joyfully spoke these words:
"With my offerings to the Dharma King,
May this merit be fulfilled, O Śākyamuni."
The Buddha knew his supreme pure conduct
And at that time rose from his seat with a smile.
Maitreya, seeing the smile, requested:
"Please explain the reason for the smile."
At that time, the great earth shook in six ways,
The nāgas and devas rejoiced, dwelling in the sky,
Looking up with joy at the Bhagavān:
"Please explain the reason for your smile.
The wisdom comprehended by the Buddhas
Is not at the stage of the Buddha's śrāvaka disciples.
Now, who will be established in the supreme path?
Please explain it out of compassion.
Except for the compassionate Bhagavān,
No one in all the worlds is capable.
Capable of bestowing the position of Dharma King,
Please bestow the prediction of enlightenment.
We now ask the Bhagavān,
The great and majestic bull of the Śākyas,
Who has already crossed the shore of the light of wisdom,
Eliminating the defilements of greed, anger, and delusion.
Inconceivable, countless billions of eons,
The Guide practiced for that long,
Seeking the supreme and wondrous practices of enlightenment,
For what reason did he smile?
He was able to abandon his own hands and feet,
Wife, children, relatives, and other loved ones,
And always practiced these supreme practices,
Therefore I ask the Muni.
Elephants, horses, chariots, cows, and sheep,
Servants, maṇi, pearls, and gold,
All the treasures that exist,
When practising for bodhi, they are not abandoned.
Their wisdom is supreme and all revealed,
Knowing the practices of all sentient beings,
Their minds believe in nature and desires, and they know well,
Please explain the reason for the smile.
Who has once made offerings to the honored among humans?
Who has now attained extensive benefits?
Who can practice what the Buddha practices?
For whom can you manifest this smile?
At that time, the earth shook in six ways,
A billion wonderful lotus flowers emerged from the earth,
Their flowers were radiant with billions of petals,
Golden in color, blazing and extremely lovely.
The Buddha's disciples were on top of those lotus flowers,
The foremost great supernatural powers of the bodhisattvas,
Innumerable Dharma masters gathered like clouds,
Therefore I ask in this way.
Drums, bells, and conch sounds,
Musical instruments numbering billions like the Ganges sands,
Such kinds of musical sounds,
The Buddha's voice is most sublime among them.
Kuśa, pheasant, and swans,
Flocks of birds gathered together at the same time,
Each emitting beautiful and wonderful sounds,
Would not be comparable to the Buddha's voice.
Who has gone to practice giving and keeping precepts,
Cultivating for countless billions of eons?
Who has made offerings to the honored among humans?
For whom does the Muni manifest a smile?
Who in the past gave rise to a great respectful mind,
And once asked the honoured among humans?
For what reason did you attain bodhi,
And now manifest this smile?
是故我問人中塔;
All the ten-powered ones of the past,
And those of the present and future,
The guides of devas and humans fully understand,
Therefore I ask about the stūpa among humans;
是故我問牟尼師;
They know the sequence of sentient beings' minds,
And their supernatural powers are not diminished,
Also knowing sentient beings' preferences,
Therefore I ask about the muni;
是故我問兩足尊;
They cultivate the supreme and most excellent practices,
And have already well learned the corresponding Dharma,
How does one attain the Buddha's path of enlightenment?
Therefore I ask about the honoured ones among bipeds;
是以我問世大師;
The subtle Dharma is difficult to see,
Empty and tranquil, inconceivable,
They cultivate the practices of the ten powers,
Therefore I ask about the great teachers of the world;
是故我問兩足尊;
If they can skillfully cultivate the mind of compassion,
Among inconceivable sentient beings,
They never give rise to the thought of sentient beings,
Therefore I ask about the honoured ones among bipeds;
Their realm of activity is inconceivable,
Its boundaries and depths cannot be found,
They have already transcended the realm of mind,
Therefore I ask about the honoured ones among bipeds;
They have perfected giving and morality,
The wise and pure understand the three times,
Far removed from all faults and evils,
For what reason do you manifest this smile?
Śāriputra, Maudgalyāyana—Kaulita,
And the other disciples of the Tathāgata,
This is not the ground they traverse,
Only the Buddha's realm is supreme;
They have reached the other shore of all dharmas,
And have perfected all that is to be learned,
The guide arouses great compassion,
And expounds the subtle and supreme sound;
Innumerable asaṃkhyeya eons ago,
Those who also asked about this meaning,
Attained the state of a venerable and compassionate saviour,
Now that they have attained fruition, please explain it for us.
Yakṣas, rākṣasas, nāgas, and kumbhāṇḍas,
Gazing up at the supremely honoured one among bipeds,
All respectfully join their palms and stand here,
Wondering why the Bhagavān smiled.
The multitude of bodhisattvas gather like clouds,
With countless billions of spiritual powers,
The Tathāgata's mind gave birth to them as their eldest son,
All respectfully joined their palms.
The Bhagavān, the guide, had no reason,
The supreme, great man showed a smile,
With subtle words and the sound of a drum,
What was the reason for showing a smile?
Gandhahastin Bodhisattva came from the east,
From that Akṣobhya Buddha's world,
Surrounded by countless bodhisattvas,
To ask Śākyamuni this question.
Again, from the world of Sukhāvatī,
Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta,
Surrounded by countless bodhisattvas,
Came to ask the biped Śākyamuni.
In the past, countless billions of buddhas,
Made offerings to countless tathāgatas,
As numerous as the sands of the great ocean,
To practice for the highest and supreme bodhi.
All the buddhas praise him,
The virtues of the bodhisattvas he has already perfected,
In the worlds of the ten directions, all hear and know,
Mañjuśrī stands with palms joined.
Traveling to countless buddha lands,
Such a supreme assembly is difficult to see,
The Buddha's sons, virtuous and well-learned,
All respectfully stand with palms joined.
The most supreme vessel, none other,
Such a gentle and subdued one,
Can uphold all the Buddha's Dharma treasury,
Please speak with pleasing and harmonising words.
The Bhagavān, the guide, had no reason,
The supreme, great man showed a smile,
With subtle words and the sound of a drum,
What was the reason for showing a smile?
Cuckoo, the mynah, the goose, the peacock,
The thundering voice of the king of bulls, the roar:
May the heavenly music of exquisite beauty emerge,
May you expound words that increase joy,
Well-accumulated compassion free from all faults,
With wisdom present, and delusion cut off.
Revealing the true meaning, free from words,
He cultivated for hundreds of thousands of kalpas,
Definitely empty and quiescent, knowing all existences,
Revealing the meaning of the cessation of suffering.
Capable of destroying all non-Buddhist knowledge,
Empty, without sentient beings or soul,
The Buddhas cultivate hundreds of thousands of practices,
Adorned with hundreds of thousands of kinds of blessings.
Hundreds of thousands of devas all praise him,
Hundreds of thousands of Brahmās also do so,
Yakṣas, rākṣasas, and others with pure minds,
Mahoragas and garuḍas are joyful.
The mouth always speaks without obstruction,
Arising from pure and wondrous karmic fruits.
All Buddhas who have passed away into cessation,
Those who, in the present and future worlds,
Comprehend all without obstruction,
Arise from all merits.
The great ocean, the great earth, and the mountains,
All shake in six ways.
The devas, asuras, nāgas, and mahoragas
Scatter the most excellent and supreme fragrant flowers,
Cutting off greed, anger, and arrogance,
Morality, mind, and intention are all pure.
The sound of quiescence is called non-thought,
The great sage thus roars like a lion.
Possessing eloquence and extensive renown,
Equal in the eyes and in the Dharma,
Incomparable in the world and without surpassing,
May you compassionately explain the meaning of your smile.
於佛少音非為譬;
The sounds of the cuckoo, the pheasant, the swan, and the peacock,
The exquisite sounds of the kalaviṅka bird,
All produced at once, extremely delightful,
Are not comparable to a slight sound from the Buddha.
於佛少音非為譬;
The sounds of thousands of kinds of heavenly music,
And the exquisite songs of the heavenly maidens,
Assembled together, harmonising and producing love in people,
Are not comparable to a slight sound from the Buddha.
The beautiful music of a thousand kinds from the heavens
And the wonderful songs of the heavenly maidens
Are harmoniously gathered together, giving rise to love in people
But are not comparable to a slight sound from the Buddha.
The Bhagavān with one sound
Causes various understandings to arise according to their faith
And makes all think that the Buddha is speaking to them;
Please explain the reason for the great śrāmaṇa's smile.
The wonderful sounds of the devas and nāgas
And the kinnaras, gandharvas, and piśācas
Cannot extinguish afflictions
But the Buddha's sounds can cut them off.
Although they give rise to loving minds without defilement
They practise compassion and are able to leave behind the faults of anger
They give rise to wisdom and leave behind delusion
Those who can do this leave behind all defilements.
The Buddha's sounds do not go beyond the assembly
They can cut off a hundred kinds of doubts
In their sounds there is no high or low
The Muni's wonderful sounds are tranquil and equal.
Even if the trichiliocosm were destroyed
And the great ocean dried up in an instant
The sun and moon could fall to the ground
But the Bhagavān would never speak falsely.
His speech is pure with sixty kinds,
His roar is deep and beautiful without fear
Please speak with Tathāgata's Brahmā-like voice:
Why did you manifest a smile in tranquility?
All the various beings in the three realms:
You are able to fully understand their conduct
In the past, present, and future,
Please explain the reason for the smile, O Honored One among humans.
All the greatly compassionate Tathāgatas
Have attained perfection in the powers
The Tathāgata's pure moon-like face
Is never without reason for manifesting a smile."
