Therupon, the Bhagavān recited this gāthā:
I remember that in a past kalpa, sixty million buddhas
All arose on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain.
When I was seeking the path in the past,
I heard of this meditation from those venerable ones.
The last of those sixty million buddhas
Was one who directly illuminated the world,
Called Śālendrarāja Buddha.
I then asked that venerable one about this meditation.
I was then born into the kṣatriya caste,
And I was the most honorable among kings.
I had a full five hundred sons,
And I was endowed with all arts.
I then, for that unsurpassed Honored One,
Built a full one hundred million monasteries,
Using pure, excellent, great sandalwood,
And covering them with gold, silver, and various jewels.
I was then a king loved by the people.
I was then called King Bhīṣmottara,
I extensively arranged offerings for the Buddha
For a full eighteen hundred billion years.
At that time the supremely honoured one among bipeds
Was called Śālendrarāja.
He lived for seven hundred and sixty million years
And widely taught the Path in the world.
There were eight billion śrāvakas,
Endowed with the threefold knowledge and the six supernormal faculties, always in meditation,
Abiding in their last bodies, free from the effluents.
Such a noble assembly was free from slander.
I prepared various excellent offerings
And made offerings to the one who had crossed over the evil realms.
Because I wanted to benefit humans and devas,
I sought this samādhi.
I renounced home life together with my wife and children
And upheld the incomparable teaching of that buddha.
For fourteen trillion years
I constantly asked about this samādhi.
Eighty thousand nayutas of gāthās praised it,
And eight hundred trillion different verses were recited.
That buddha taught this to others
And discussed only one chapter of this meditation.
Heads, eyes, hands, feet, and wives and children,
As well as various rare jewels and food and drink,
All riches, without exception, I gave away,
For the sake of seeking this samādhi.
I recall that in the past ten billion tathāgatas,
And also buddhas equal in number to the sands of the Ganges River,
All dwelt on this Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa
And expounded this excellent, quiescent meditation.
They all had the same name, Śākyamuni;
Their sons all had the same name, Rāhula;
Their attendants all had the same name, Ānanda;
Their royal cities all had the same name, Kapila;
Of their foremost among those who know the world,
They all had the same names, Maudgalyāyana and Śāriputra;
Their worlds all had the same name, Sahā;
And those buddhas all appeared in the polluted, evil world.
為欲行於菩提行;
I made all kinds of offerings to the Most Honorable among Humans
Because I wanted to practice bodhisattva conduct.
I offered all kinds of offerings
Because I wished to recite and uphold this meditation.
得是三昧則不難;
If one activates and cultivates excellent practices to attain this meditation,
One will attain this meditation and practise it in innumerable ways.
If one abides in all meritorious practices,
To attain this samādhi is not difficult.
得是三昧則不難;
If one is not attached to any taste and is free from agitation,
If one does not concern oneself with worldly matters and is without jealousy,
If one abides in great compassion and is free from anger,
To attain this samādhi is not difficult.
得是三昧則不難;
If one avoids worldliness and does not hanker after worldly gain,
If one is free from wrong livelihood and pure and has no afflictions,
If one is clear and fearless in adhering to the precepts,
To attain this samādhi is not difficult.
得是三昧則不難;
If one is brave and energetic and never rests,
If one takes pleasure in solitude and practises austerities,
If one abides in the patience of the subtle Dharma of no self,
To attain this samādhi is not difficult.
If one can control one’s mind and be free of conceptual proliferation,
If one can abide in the practice of deportment,
And if one can joyfully practice giving without regret,
To attain this samādhi is not difficult.
It will not be difficult to attain the excellent marks of a Tathāgata
As well as the eighteen unshared qualities,
The ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and so on,
If one can take up and bear this meditation.
If all the sentient beings seen by the Buddha’s eye
Can all become buddhas at the same time,
And if the lifespan of each of those buddhas
Is as long as inconceivable thousands of myriads of koṭis of kalpas,
And if each of those buddhas has innumerable heads,
As numerous as the sands of the great ocean,
And if each head has innumerable tongues,
As numerous as the sands of the great ocean,
And if each of those tongues praised
The merit of a single verse of this meditation,
They would not be able to speak of even a fraction of it to exhaustion:
How much less would it be possible in regard to [the merits of] copying it in writing, upholding, and bearing it?
If one has the virtue of the dhūta, which accords with meditation,
One will be loved and protected by devas, asuras, and māras,
And will always be obeyed by kings and others.
Because one upholds the meditation of quiescence, which is difficult to see.
That person will have unbounded and unimpeded eloquence.
They will expound immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sūtras
At all times, without interruption,
Because he bears this sūtra, which is the treasure of hearing and bearing.
If one wishes to see Amitābha Buddha
And the world of Sukhāvatī,
In the future, during the dreadful evil age,
One should listen to and bear this samādhi.
I now entrust it to you.
I, the honoured among humans, exhort you personally:
In the latter age after my nirvāṇa,
You should listen to and bear this samādhi.
All the buddhas who are in the ten directions,
Both past and present,
Those buddhas all learned this samādhi
And attained the unconditioned bodhi of buddhahood.
