"Therefore, O youth, if a bodhisattva should have this thought:
'How can I now rest at ease and attain anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi?'
That bodhisattva should abide by the pure aggregate of morality and regard all bodhisattvas as teachers."
At that time, the Bhagavān uttered a gāthā, saying:
“If there is a bodhisattva abiding in the aggregate of morality,
Acting for the benefit of others to practise for bodhi,
That person swiftly journeys to a delightful realm,
And can attain the highest patience, becoming a Dharma King.
Therefore, with the mind in harmony, calm and unmoving,
Always doing pleasant deeds,
Afterwards, one will behold many buddhas, shining like suns,
Swiftly attaining bodhi, free from the net of doubts.
Hearing this most excellent teaching of mine,
Seeing bhikṣus who uphold pure morality,
Without a deceitful or crooked mind, one serves them,
Then, one will soon attain this samādhi.
If one had treasure troves as numerous as the sands of the Ganges,
All filled completely with the seven jewels,
Those troves would be so vast,
Like innumerable Buddha-lands as numerous as the Ganges’ sands.
經於無量恒沙劫;
If there is a bodhisattva who delights in giving,
Day and night, constantly without interruption,
Courageously giving without the slightest pause,
Throughout innumerable kalpas as countless as Ganges sands;
If [on the other hand,] there is one who hears this samādhi,
[That latter one] then holds all the Treasuries of the Sages,
This is an immeasurable accumulation of merit,
Surpassing the previously mentioned gifts and is inconceivable.
Such merit is vast and without bounds,
It can extinguish the sufferings of the world,
This is the highest accumulation of merit,
It is hard to measure even in comparison with the merit of giving.
Accordant with bodhi, this is the foremost treasury,
A wise bodhisattva can uphold it,
If there is one who maintains this Samādhi,
They are called a bodhisattva endowed with the most incredible wealth.
This is the ocean of extensive learning in the Buddha-Dharma,
For that person, merit is hard to exhaust or limit,
Concerning this most excellent and inconceivable Dharma,
They are called a bodhisattva who truly protects.
If there is one who can teach the quiescent samādhi,
That person’s bodhi will then increase,
Surpassed only by the World Teacher, the Charioteer and Trainer,
Endowed with great compassion and spontaneous wisdom;
無有能與其比者;
They can attain innumerable merits,
Their perfected merit increasing in eminence,
Throughout the cosmos of three thousand great thousand worlds,
None can compare with them.
Others’ merit cannot equal theirs,
Praised by the wise, who they are like;
If there is one who hears this Samādhi,
Can take up and bear, read and recite,
Seeking the supreme bodhi of all the Buddhas,
Such people become their equals.
Bringing forth extensive learning like an ocean,
Their merit is immeasurable.
By taking up, bearing, and reading and reciting this Samādhi,
Such a person gathers merit,
O youth! If their merit had form,
All worlds could not contain it.
Therefore, O youth! If a bodhisattva
Wishes to make offerings to all Buddhas—
The pure ones of past, present, and future,
They should take up and bear this Samādhi.
This is the supreme bodhi of all the buddhas,
O youth! You should have faith in my words,
What the Tathāgata has spoken is never false,
We buddhas do not speak untruth.
Long ago, for hundreds of inconceivable kalpas,
I exhausted my body for this very purpose,
Always cultivating the most excellent conduct aimed at bodhi,
Seeking just such a supreme samādhi.
Therefore, you should receive this Dharma Treasury,
From which nayutas of sūtras arise,
This accumulation of merit is vast and inconceivable,
For it can lead to the attainment of the wisdom of all buddhas.
Of all the various sūtras, this is the foremost,
Bringing forth countless wholesome deeds;
Always fearlessly proclaiming this sūtra,
The end of its Dharma teachings cannot be obtained.
或可能知諸塵數;
If one were to grind the cosmos of three thousand great thousand worlds into dust,
Perhaps one could know the number of its dust motes;
Constantly proclaiming hundreds of thousands of inconceivable sūtras,
No one can measure them.
出入氣息猶可知;
In this Buddha-land, regarding its sentient beings,
One might still know the measure of their breathing in and out;
But the sūtras that bodhisattvas constantly expound,
No one can know their boundary or limit.
無有知彼所說經;
If Buddha-lands were as numerous as the sands of the Ganges,
And within them, the beings of the six realms,
Even if one could measure the number of their minds,
No one could know the sūtras they explain.
無能知彼所說法;
With innumerable koṭīs of world-realms,
Their great oceans, rivers, and sands in pools,
Though one could count the number of their sand,
No one can know the Dharma they proclaim.
彼諸言音不可知;
If one were to split a single hair-tip into a hundred parts,
And by drops from it measure the waters of countless koṭīs of realms,
One could have accumulated all such water,
But still, one could not know the extent of their [Dharmas’] words and sounds.
不能知彼所說經;
In the countless koṭīs of past kalpas,
All sentient beings therein,
Though one might count the dust motes of their bodies,
One could not know the sūtras they proclaimed.
All sentient beings in the ten directions,
One might count their voices and sounds,
No matter how unceasing their discourse,
They cannot know how many sūtras there are.
Having well-studied words, phrases, and meanings,
And able to expound all Dharma teachings,
With vast, swift, and beneficial wisdom,
They understand the True Dharma and answer all inquiries.
With wisdom penetrating profound and extensive meanings,
They should always know the mind’s inconceivability,
Thoroughly knowing the intrinsic nature of sounds,
Thus, their speech is without obstruction.
They are called a great Dharma teacher with no obstruction,
Teaching the world’s beings without attachment,
Well-trained in answering questions and explanations,
They have realised the ultimate meaning.
Within a single phrase, they can give myriad explanations,
Their inconceivable speech has no stagnation or attachment,
Having studied unobstructed meanings of phrases,
They have no impediment in teaching among the assemblies.
If there is one who constantly abides by this Samādhi,
They achieve fearlessness and immobile non-retrogression,
Already having attained the power of Dharma and the practice of supreme conduct,
They can benefit countless koṭīs of sentient beings.
諸有猛風莫能壞;
Just like Mount Sumeru, stable and unmoving,
No fierce winds can destroy it;
So, too, is the Dharma-teacher bhikṣu,
No debates can alter him.
In the cosmos of three thousand great thousand worlds,
All the mountains and so forth within,
May be shaken or moved by all the winds,
But a bhikṣu abiding in emptiness cannot be moved.
If one can constantly accord with emptiness,
This is certainly the abode of the Buddha,
If one definitely knows that all dharmas are empty,
No divergent arguments can prevail over them.
由說如是寂定故;
All other heretical teachings cannot sway them,
No external doctrines can destroy them,
No one can violate or slander them,
Because they proclaim such a quiescent concentration.
持是最勝三昧故;
That person has thoroughly investigated the emptiness of all dharmas,
Always abiding in immeasurable wisdom,
Having no doubts about all dharmas,
Because they uphold this most supreme Samādhi.
受持讀誦是經故;
Attaining the various powers and factors of the path is not difficult,
Likewise, achieving supernormal powers and unobstructed eloquence,
And also obtaining superior spiritual attainments is likewise,
Because of taking up, bearing, reading, and reciting this sūtra.
Dying here and being reborn elsewhere is not difficult,
They can see the most supreme, immeasurable wisdom,
Inconceivable koṭīs of nayutas of buddhas,
Are all seen by those who bear this sūtra.
In the presence of all these Buddhas,
They hear such a defilement-free Samādhi,
Accomplishing supreme corresponding wisdom,
They can reach the shore of the four types of eloquence.
Within the cosmoses of three thousand great thousand worlds,
From its lowest limit up to the Peak of Existence,
If all were filled with delightful luminous maṇi gems cherished by the devas,
And the seven precious substances,
In the infinite Buddha-lands of the ten directions,
From the great earth below up to the Peak of Existence,
If all were filled with Jambūnāda gold,
And all offered to the sages,
深信為求菩提故;
All the treasures of the entire world,
Offered as gifts for innumerable kalpas,
Constantly giving to the Tathāgata without end,
With deep faith, seeking bodhi,
And if, on the other hand, a bhikṣu delights in emptiness,
And in one thought moment, joins palms in reverence to the Buddha,
Compared to the vast accumulation of merit from the previous giving,
The giving’s merit does not reach even a fraction of a kalā [minute part] of the latter.
我知世間已校量;
If a person obtains abundant and vast goods,
Gives them with faith to generate merit,
Seeking incomparable Buddha-bodhi,
I know this can be measured in the world.
If, on the other hand, a person, regarding this Samādhi,
After hearing it, he upholds just four lines of verse from it,
The merit this person accumulates—
The previous merit, even a hundredfold, does not equal one part of it.
未能速得無上道;
A most excellent bodhisattva practising giving,
Cannot yet swiftly attain unsurpassed bodhi;
But if one hears this supreme precious Samādhi,
They will swiftly attain the highest bodhi.
菩薩不以為富足;
Even if one obtains treasure troves,
Filling innumerable lands as numerous as the Ganges’ sands,
All replete with various precious things,
A bodhisattva does not consider this wealth.
If one cuts off craving and cultivates merit,
And further obtains this Samādhi,
They then possess all means of livelihood,
Their storerooms overflowing, endowed with great wealth.
智者於此不為喜;
Suppose one gains the Four Continents,
The wise would not rejoice in this;
But if they obtain such a defilement-free Samādhi,
They will delight, exult, and benefit sentient beings."
At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, having donned armour, praised the benefits of this samādhi and also for the sake of future bodhisattvas to take up, bear, read, and recite it, to gain joy, and to assist their strength, spoke this gāthā:
“Those wise ones who can uphold the Dharma,
They are guardians of merit and authoritative power,
They also can take up and bear, from all buddhas,
The vast and supremely excellent Dharma-eye.
In the final age, an evil time of much greed and anger,
When beings abandon non-negligence and always become negligent,
Regarding the perfectly fulfilled supreme scriptures of true meaning,
Who will be able to take up and bear them?
Those who, with various morality, meditation, patience, and a wealth of hearing,
Are adorned by a well-studied demeanour,
Delight in the Dharma-wisdom of the tree of liberation,
And can don the supreme garment of shame and remorse.
They maintain great wisdom and delight in liberation,
Being the king of Dharma-mountains upon the great earth,
Observing that the world has no guide,
They lead them toward Buddha-bodhi.
是人趣向一切智;
Constantly taming the mind into quiescence,
Such a person advances toward all knowledge;
They train untrained sentient beings until they are trained,
This child of omniscience is supreme.
They realise liberation themselves and enable others to attain it,
Escaping the branches of craving,
They awaken those beings always heedless and asleep,
Thus allowing them to become awakened.
They always take delight in well-training,
And constantly rejoice in giving the Dharma,
They never associate with any jealousy,
They enjoy generosity free from stinginess.
Seeing impoverished beings in distress,
They always provide them with necessities,
This is the supreme path of fulfilled merit,
And the wise constantly cultivate it.
They beat the drum of the great and excellent Dharma,
With a joyful mind, they strike it,
Removing doubts and nets, understanding the sublime Dharma,
Their wisdom is firm like vajra.
Dwelling amidst an assembly in the supreme noble Dharma-realm,
They can know the minds and desires of sentient beings,
They expound the utmost ambrosial Dharma,
Known as the supreme essential sūtra.
They themselves abide in supreme supernormal powers,
Able to bestow the most excellent eye upon the world,
Expelling ignorance and darkness like the sun,
Generative of wisdom like a mine.
They reveal reality and remove fear,
Increasing superior wisdom and cultivating dhyāna and samādhi,
They proclaim the most subtle and fine Dharma:
This is called the quiescent supreme liberation.
Those who hear and receive, and whom the wise honour,
Establish faith and meaning, enhancing merit,
They can know the world’s supreme Dharma-treasury,
Constantly proclaiming delightful words.
Skilled in words and mastering correct propriety,
They rely on the lamp of Dharma-illumination,
Ever with a benevolent heart, they benefit sentient beings,
Cultivating the most excellent and subtle Dharma.

They dwell on the Dharma-path free from dust and stain,

They can become the unsurpassed Dharma-honoured one,
Abiding in the foremost reverence,
Constantly upholding the wondrous true awakening,
According with and turning the supreme Dharma-wheel.
Those foolish and self-indulgent ones,
Seeing such evil sentient beings,
Observing their minds confused, heading toward perilous ways,
Approaching the gate of evil realms, hard to cross.
They raise great compassion and a pure mind,
Having arisen it, they can remove the world’s suffering,

They establish sentient beings in that supreme place.

The wise can know the desires of sentient beings.
Seeing beings afflicted by defilements with no refuge,
Various evil faults afflicting the world,
With the medicine of Dharma, they cause purgation,
According to Dharma, healing them.

With the power of patience and the sword of wisdom,
They don the steadfast armour of compassion,
The noble ones gladden the wise through insight,
Dwelling in the Dharma with no deceit.
They are the supremely honoured ones in the three kinds of existence,
Exercising mastery over all sentient beings,
Seeing the multitudes rely on Māra’s path,
Wandering, having lost their way to the correct and true path.
That path is the utmost pure, noble one,
They reveal it fearlessly,
Innumerable hundreds of thousands of nayutas of beings,
Go forth to this path of fearless ease.
They serve as a lamp for the world,
As a refuge, a haven, and a home,
For fearful beings they give fearlessness,
Comforting all sentient beings.

Seeing them afflicted by hundreds of sufferings,
Like those born blind who see nothing,
They nevertheless kindle the supremely great Dharma-torch,
Proclaiming and revealing its true meaning.

They bring comfort and ease to sentient beings.
All are enabled to reach the far shore,
They serve as the supreme great guide,
Out of compassion for the world, heading toward bodhi,
They settle them in a place of fearlessness.
The Muni is always untiring,
In what is called wisdom and merit,
Having reached the shores of morality, patience, and dhyāna-samādhi,
He abides in the profound and subtle Dharma.
He has no weariness in other places,
Expounding the most excellent quiescent Dharma,
Like heavenly rains pouring over the great earth,
So does the Dharma-rain fill him likewise.
If there are sentient beings who approach him,
Seeking profound Dharma and its names and meanings,
Hearing the Dharma-treasure there,
They can remove immeasurable, boundless suffering.
Their vast doubts and delusions,
Are swiftly cut off by the sword of Dharma,
They reach the shores of morality, patience, and samādhi,
Able to know the abundant faith and delight of sentient beings.
The great being has reached the ultimate wisdom,
Already well-knowing the wishes of all beings,
Observing the actions of their minds,
They know decisively what their minds do.
If some hear their wise speech,
They enable nayutas of beings to gain pure eyes,
Ferrying them to the shore of concentration and liberation,
They can enter and abide in the true path.
Koṭīs of nayutas of Māra’s hordes
Cannot measure their mental activities,
Like the traces of birds in empty space,
No one can measure them.
安住最上聖法中;
With the taming, quiescence, and strength of wisdom,
Abiding in the supreme noble Dharma,
They freely crush the powers of Māra,
Awakening to the supreme and excellent bodhi.
They always reach the shore of supernormal powers,
Able to swiftly journey through hundreds of thousands of realms,
Beholding nayutas of koṭīs of buddhas,
Their number as numerous as the sands of the Ganges.
With pure eyes unimpeded by any obstacle,
They behold all the guides of the ten directions,
Guarding the faculties without defilement,
They freely roam innumerable lands.
Suppose all sentient beings of the ten directions
At once became teachers,
For nayuta-counted kalpas
They would ceaselessly praise without interruption,
Yet their unobstructed eloquence would not be exhausted,
