"O Youth! Therefore, the bodhisattva-mahasattvas who delight in this meditation should cultivate its initial practice.
What is the initial practice of the bodhisattva in this samādhi? The bodhisattva mahasattvas, headed by great compassion, whether the Buddha is in the world or has passed away, always diligently make offerings to the Buddha of flowers, garlands, scented powders, ointments, jewelled banners, pennants, canopies, music, song, dance, entertainment, clothing, food, drink, and medicines. They dedicate all these roots of goodness to this samādhi and make offerings to the Buddha without seeking any other dharmas. They do not seek beautiful forms, wealth, birth in heaven, or followers; they only think of this Dharma. These bodhisattvas do not see the Buddha even in the Dharma, much less outside the Dharma. Therefore, O Youth, this is the true making of offerings to the Buddha, but they do not see that there is a Buddha to be apprehended. They do not grasp the idea of self and do not seek rewards. These bodhisattvas, with the three spheres purified, make offerings to the Tathāgata of garlands of flowers, incense, scented powders, perfumes, jewelled banners, pennants, and canopies, as well as music, song, dance, instrumental music, food and drink, clothes, and medicine for the sick, and dedicate them to anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi. Because of these roots of goodness, they attain inconceivable merit and inconceivable rewards. Having attained this samādhi, they quickly accomplish anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi.
Then, the Bhagavān uttered the following gāthā:
"If any offer incense to infinite knowledge,
They will attain immeasurable fragrant rewards.
For ten million kalpas, they will leave the lower realms
And never have any foul odour.
成佛獲得勝戒香;
If any carry out excellent practices for ten million kalpas,
They will make offerings to a hundred trillion Buddhas
And attain the excellent fragrance of morality.
If any know that there are no sentient beings,
則得柔軟勝順忍;
That there is neither a giver nor a receiver of incense,
If any can arouse the will to give in this way,
They will attain gentle, supreme patience.
If any cultivate this patience well,
Even if they have to cut their bodies apart as though they being ploughed,
For as many kalpas as sand grains in ten billion Ganges Rivers,
Their minds will be firm and non-retrogressing.
How can one be called patient?
How can one be called according?
How can one be called non-retrogressing?
How can one be called a bodhisattva?
One delights in the selflessness of one's own nature,
Because one has no self, one is without afflictions,
One can know that all dharmas are completely extinguished:
Because of this, one is called patient.
One follows the Buddha's teachings to learn them,
A wise person always practising in accord with the Dharma,
One knows all the Buddha Dharma without doubt:
Therefore, one is called according.
When practising, if there will be a worldly Māra
Who will manifest in the form of a Buddha and say:
'Buddhahood is difficult to attain, so become a sravaka. '
If one does not accept this, one is called non-retrogressing.
They awaken sentient beings with wrong views,
Telling them that they cannot realize the path to the deathless,
They exhort them to leave the evil ways and abide in the good:
Therefore, they are called bodhisattvas.
Those who accept the Dharma abide in the path of accordance,
They use the Dharma of no self to enlighten,
Even in their dreams, they do not entertain thoughts
About the existence of a sentient being or a soul.
If māras, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges,
Transform themselves into the bodies of buddhas and come to them,
They will all say:
'There is a soul in your body.'
They will then say:
‘There is no self. You are not a buddha. ’
Through their wisdom, they will comprehend the emptiness of dharmas.
Having understood this, they will not be accompanied by afflictions.
They will speak of existence as being ludicrous speech.
Having seen this, they will enter nirvana and go forth into the world.
As an analogy, when a child is born,
People immediately give it a name.
But if one looks for the name in various places, it cannot be found.
Therefore, you should know that the name comes from nowhere.
What is the reason for calling someone a bodhisattva?
A bodhisattva cannot be found anywhere,
Not even in the at the reality limit.
Someone who knows this is called a bodhisattva.
Even if the ocean were on fire,
A bodhisattva would not give rise to the view of a self.
The bodhisattva who attains the stage of first aspiration for awakening,
Immediately cut off all views and afflictions.
They do not see any dharmas that arise or cease,
Such as sentient beings and a soul.
All dharmas are empty in essence, like illusions,
Which are not known by those of other paths.
是則不知佛菩提;
If one is greedy for food and drink,
Stingy with clothing and bowls,
Or reckless and impetuous,
One does not know the bodhi of buddhas.
是則不知佛菩提;
If one is often slothful and indolent,
Deceitful and hypocritical, violent and lacking in self-control,
Or, if one lacks pure faith in the buddhas,
One does not know the bodhi of buddhas.
If one breaks the precepts and has no sense of shame or conscience,
If one has no faith in the Buddha Dharma,
If one has no respect for those who live the noble life,
One does not know the bodhi of buddhas.
是則能知勝菩提;
Not to violate the pure precepts, to have shame and conscience,
To deeply delight in the Buddha Dharma,
To honour one’s companions in the noble life:
Thus, one can know superior bodhi.
To take the bases of mindfulness as sacred objects,
To take joy as one’s bed and seat,
To take dhyāna as food and samādhi as drink:
Thus, one can know the Buddha's bodhi.
Taking patience at no-self as the place to practice,
One practises right mindfulness in the empty forest.
They enjoy the fragrant flowers of the seven factors of awakening:
When they smell them, they realize the unsurpassed bodhi.
The path cultivated by bodhisattvas
Is not the stage of the practice of those of other paths,
Even of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas:
What wise one would not covet pleasure [therein]?
Even if my life were to be extremely long,
Even for immeasurable kalpas equal in number to the sands of the Ganges,
I would never be able to exhaust describing the virtues of even a single hair of the Buddha,
For the Tathāgata’s wisdom is boundless.
If one hears of such great benefits as these,
Which are fearlessly taught by the Bhagavān,
One should quickly teach others to bear this meditation,
For therein, unsurpassed bodhi will be attained without difficulty.
