At that time, the Bhagavān spoke the following gāthā:
"I remember countless kalpas ago,
There was a Buddha, a Tathāgata of great name,
Called Tejaguṇarāja Buddha,
Worshipped by humans and devas.
Ten billion bhikṣus possessed supernatural powers,
Having reached the shore of eloquence and freedom,
Abiding in dhūta practice with minds tamed,
The Buddha was surrounded by such a great assembly.
There was a city of seven billion and six hundred million,
With a width and length of two thousand miles,
At that time, the world of Jambudvīpa,
Was composed of the finest seven treasures.
The city was marvellous and extremely beautiful,
Adorned with hundreds of magnificent gardens,
Its parks and groves were like dense clouds,
Always filled with various flowers and fruits.
Different kinds of trees grew there,
Including mango, jambū, and banana trees,
There gathered kāṇikāra, jamba, bilva,
And clusters of nikaṭā and pipal birds.
Kalaviṅka, kucchi, peacocks, and others,
The geese and śarīka birds were full of joy,
Various types of birds sang different melodies,
Flocking and playing in the hundreds of gardens.
Like the king parrot of Tidu and the nāra bee,
The crane birds produced harmonious sounds,
Their bodies had various coloured feathers,
Perched on lotuses, they emitted beautiful tones.
All the egg-born creatures of different types,
Produced melodious sounds that brought people joy,
They roamed the parks and gardens, enjoying themselves,
Sharing their joy and calling out to each other.
Muktaka flowers, śuka flowers,
Palya and kuravaka trees,
Saha trees spread like clouds,
With padma, puṇḍarīka, and kumuda flowers.
Various types of flowers bloomed in the water,
Adorning the ponds with great beauty,
Various fragrant flowers enhanced the scene,
Making the gardens and groves truly delightful.
At that time, there was a king in Jambudvīpa,
Named Dṛdhadatta, the ruler of people,
This king had five hundred sons,
Skilled in arts, gentle, and upright.
His kingdom was abundant and peaceful,
With no faults and constant supreme joy,
The ground was covered with fragrant flowers,
Indistinguishable from the palaces of the devas.
At that time, the muni king of the Dharma,
Proclaimed the teaching of tranquillity and cessation,
Saying:
'All paths are like dreams,
There is neither birth nor death.
Sentient beings and souls are unattainable,
All dharmas are completely illusory,
Like empty space, lightning, or illusions,
Like mirages or the moon reflected in water.
There are no dharmas of birth and death in this world,
Nor is there anyone who goes to another realm,
The deeds performed in the past are not destroyed,
And the results of black and white karma in the three realms do not perish.
There is no cessation or permanence in actions,
They do not accumulate as karma or remain in existence,
One does not receive the results of one's own actions,
Nor does one receive the results of another's actions.
There is no going and no coming,
Sentient beings are neither existent nor non-existent,
There are no grasping views or wrong views,
And no sentient beings or pure conduct.
The phrase of non-birth, quiescence, and no marks,
Is the Buddha’s realm of the Tathāgata’s virtues,
It is the power of the dhāraṇī and the ten powers,
And the place of the Buddha’s supreme conduct.
The accumulation of pure, white, virtuous Dharmas,
With the supreme power of wisdom and dhāraṇī,
With boundless power of transformation and supernatural abilities,
And eloquence arising from the six types of wisdom.
無行之行非法行;
Their nature is never diminished,
The practice of non-practice is the true practice;
In the Dharma realm, there is no going,
This practice of non-practice is the true Dharma practice.
The nature of sound does not enter into self-nature,
There is no abiding in the nature of its path,
This self-nature practice has no dwelling or reliance,
It is the Buddha's realm, far from defilements and in quiescence.
The practice of meditation is the supreme meditation,
Non-practice has no abiding in self-nature,
In self-nature, one always follows what is,
The subtle, unshakable truth is hard to perceive.
They always abide without moving,
Dwelling without dwelling in the nature of Dharma,
It is impossible to express abiding in self-nature,
This is the unmovable practice abiding in the Dharma.
Speaking with sound about the non-sound path,
The essence of sound and the path is the Dharma path,
There is no other accumulation of sound with location,
Thus, the nature of practice is the Dharma practice.
What is said as the practice of sound is not born of practice,
Its essence is the practice of the true meaning of Dharma,
Speaking of sentient beings' practice with sound,
Both the sound and the practice of sentient beings are non-existent.
There is no entry into written words,
The vast wisdom and meaning are likewise,
This path is praised by the Buddhas and practiced,
A luminous Dharma truth of subtle practice.
Great wisdom free from defilements,
If one can abide in the incomparable,
Always showering the finest Dharma rain,
That is called the supreme path of emptiness and true meaning.
The first phrase is the purest far from defilements,
The supreme quiescence surpasses all defilements,
There is no grasping, no dispute or speculation,
This is the quiescent phrase spoken by the Buddha.
Neither at the beginning, middle, nor end do they abide,
Neither existent nor non-existent, nor any location;
Having realized the nature of such practice,
This is the incomparable Dharma taught by the Buddha.'
At that time, King Dṛdhadatta heard,
The Two-footed Bhagavān speak this concentration,
With eighty billion nayuta beings,
They joyfully and faithfully approached the Buddha.
The king bowed to the Hero among humans,
With great faith, he respectfully honoured the Buddha,
Receiving the teaching, he withdrew and stood aside,
Gazing with reverence, with hands joined in veneration.
The Buddha knew the king’s pure conduct,
Whose faculties and awareness had reached the other shore,
The Bhagavān, understanding his heart’s desires,
Taught him this supreme Samādhi.
The king, hearing this teaching of ultimate meaning,
Greatly increased his joy and sacred faith,
He renounced all four great continents,
Abandoning the pleasures of the five desires to become a renunciant.
Because of the king’s renunciation,
He deeply and resolutely delighted in the Buddha,
At that time, all people of Jambudvīpa,
Also renounced desires and became renunciants.
The bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs delighted in practising meditation,
The Tathāgata’s disciples became innumerable,
Grain naturally arose from the earth,
And devas came to serve and attend.
Robe-cloth for Dharma garments grew from trees,
Immaculately pure and greatly cherished,
They were cut, sewn, and tailored according to the law,
By the merit and power of that Buddha’s virtue.
O Youth! You should observe that king,
Who renounced his home and the world,
Seeing the three realms as mechanical contraptions,
He sought the great joy of bodhi.
In the future from that time, during the end times of the Dharma,
There were those who could not even renounce their poor, lowly homes,
Bound by chains and shackles in great suffering,
They had no faith in this supreme Dharma.
Though bound in chains and punished with whips,
Cursed and humiliated in countless ways,
Enduring extreme hardship, the king bore it all,
Yet even in severe poverty, they would not renounce their homes.
Lacking wealth and with short lives,
They toiled in vain without any merit,
Ignorant and unlearned in any skills,
Those people always remained in ordinary realms.
Distressed and purposeless, obstinate and evil,
Greedy for wealth, seizing others’ riches,
They mocked and slandered good people,
While claiming they aroused bodhicitta.
They lusted after others' wives and stole their possessions,
Miserly, jealous, deceitful, and indulgent,
Lacking compassion, they headed toward evil paths,
Yet claimed:
"I will become a Buddha."
Seeing others in suffering, they felt joy,
Breaking precepts, violent, and harbouring malice,
They forgot kindness and harmed others,
Saying:
"O great one! Teach me the Dharma."
When they heard someone speak of the bodhi path,
They became angry at that person instead,
If they saw the teacher of the Dharma make a minor mistake,
They exaggerate and multiply it a thousandfold.
O Youth! Now hear what I say:
Do not approach such people,
If you wish to realise the bodhi path,
Do not associate with them, not even in dreams.
