At that time, the Bhagavān said to the youth Candraprabha:
“An immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, asaṃkhya of kalpas in the past, there was a Buddha named Ghoṣadatta Tathāgata, Arhat, Fully Awakened One, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Leader, Tamer of Persons, Teacher of Devas and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavān. O Youth! That Ghoṣadatta Tathāgata established countless, inconceivable numbers of sentient beings in anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi. After having enabled devas and humans to cultivate the Buddha's activities, he entered final nirvāṇa without remainder.
“O Youth! At that time, there was a king named Śrīghoṣa. After the parinirvāṇa of Ghoṣadatta Tathāgata, in order to make offerings to the Ghoṣadatta Tathāgata, this king constructed eighty-four thousand million stūpas. In front of each stūpa, he lit hundreds of thousands of nayutas of lamps, and with all kinds of music, fragrant flowers, precious garlands, ointments, and powdered incense, as well as all kinds of clothing, jeweled canopies, banners, and flags, he made offerings to these Buddhas, these Tathāgatas, and placed them at the stūpa.
“At that time, after King Śrīghoṣa had made offerings at the stūpas of the Tathāgata’s relics, eighty million nayutas of great bodhisattvas gathered there. He provided all kinds of enjoyable means to them—these bodhisattvas were all great Dharma teachers, skillfully able to teach the Dharma, endowed with immeasurable eloquence, and skillfully able to reveal the true merits of immeasurable dharmas. O Youth! At that time, in the assembly, there was a bhikṣu named Kṣemadatta, who was seated there. He was still in the prime of youth, with a radiant face and black hair, dwelling in the pure and excellent conduct of a youth. He had never indulged in the pleasures of sensual desires, having first received full ordination in the early summer.
“O Youth! At that time, King Śrīghoṣa invited the great assembly of bodhisattvas, wishing to fulfil the six pāramitās and the bodhisattva dhāraṇī treasury, to skillfully master expedient means and be free from obstacles. Therefore, during that night, he invited the assembly of great bodhisattvas before the Buddha and held a Dharma assembly. At that time, hundreds of thousands of nayutas of lamps were all brightly shining, and the halls and pavilions were swept and sprinkled, while various kinds of flowers were scattered and various kinds of fine garments were laid out.
“Then, King Śrīghoṣa, along with his royal consorts, palace women, and ministers, as well as the people of the city and all his attendants, with various musical instruments in hand, carrying ointments, powdered incense, garlands, clothing, jeweled canopies, banners, and flags, went forth and made offerings to the Buddha’s stupas. After making these offerings, along with eighty thousand palace women, they ascended to the high pavilions to listen to the Dharma. At that time, countless devas and humans gathered to hear the Dharma.
“At that time, Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu saw hundreds of thousands of nayutas of lamps brightly illuminating and observed the great assembly. He then thought:
‘I also practice the Mahāyāna, delighting in seeking the nature of all dharmas in their equality and the samādhi of non-discursiveness. If I wish to attain this samādhi now, I should make offerings at this Buddha’s stupa. I will now make such offerings, so that the devas, humans, and asuras will have extraordinary thoughts, be joyous and elated, and gain the light of the Dharma. I will make offerings that will surpass the offerings of this king, and I will cause King Śrīghoṣa, along with his royal consorts and attendants, to see my offerings and all be filled with joy.’
“At that time, Kṣemadatta Bodhisattva, seeing the great assembly gathered before the stupa to hear the Dharma, during that night wrapped his right arm in cloth, anointed it with oil, and lit it as an offering to the Buddha. While residing in superior faith and seeking anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi, he lit his right arm without any change in his mind or appearance.
“O Youth! At that time, when Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu lit his arm, the earth trembled, and the light of his arm outshone the countless hundreds of thousands of lamps, causing them all to lose their radiance. The light of his arm illuminated the ten directions. At that time, Kṣemadatta Bodhisattva, filled with joy, entered the samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas, free from discursiveness, and, with harmonious and beautiful eloquence, sang a gātha that resounded throughout the great assembly, causing everyone to hear it. At that time, twelve thousand devas of Trāyastriṃśa were filled with joy and offered various kinds of offerings, all gathering for the sake of the Dharma.
“At that time, King Śrīghoṣa, on the high pavilion, along with his royal consorts and palace women, saw Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu burning his right arm. The brilliant red flames illuminated all directions. Upon seeing this, the king thought:
‘This bhikṣu must have attained supernatural abilities to manifest such an extraordinary display, showing no attachment to his body and life.’
“At that time, King Śrīghoṣa, seeing the extraordinary transformation of Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu, was filled with love and joy. Through the power of pure faith and the strength of his own good roots, he, along with his royal consorts and eighty thousand palace women, threw themselves down from the pavilion, which was a thousand elbows high, in order to see this bodhisattva-bhikṣu. Through the power of reverence and their wholesome roots, they immediately received the protection of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, and mahoragas, preventing them from falling to the ground. Due to the protective power of the devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, and mahoragas, King Śrīghoṣa, along with his royal consorts and palace women, though they had fallen from the high pavilion, were not injured physically or mentally, nor did they feel any fatigue or fear.
“At that time, King Śrīghoṣa clasped his hands together and wept loudly. The entire great assembly did the same, seeing Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu with his arm burning like a garland of campaka flowers. His arm was long and slender, like the trunk of an elephant king. All the onlookers marvelled at this sight, with none failing to gasp in astonishment, shedding tears of commiseration.
“At that time, Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu, seeing the great king and all the people weeping in sorrow, asked the king:
‘O Great King! Why do you wail and shed tears, and why is the great assembly crying in this manner?’
"At that time, King Śrīghoṣa answered with a gātha:
"'O wise Kṣemadatta!
Great Dharma teacher of supreme wisdom!
Seeing you burn your body parts,
This is why we weep in commiseration.
Your appearance is so exquisite,
Like a blazing fire,
Seeing you destroy your body,
Increases my anguish.
When you burned your right arm,
Its light shone throughout the ten directions,
Outshining all lamps,
Even stars and the moon disappeared.
The great earth trembled fully,
Yet your mind was unmoved,
Reverence arose in my heart,
For I knew you were no ordinary man.
From the thousand-elbow-high pavilion,
With eighty thousand palace women,
I cast myself down,
Yet no harm came to my body.
Excellent! Your pure wisdom!
Excellent! Your supreme mind!
Excellent! O diligent one!
Excellent! You have attained great faith!
When you burned your body and arm,
Your mind remained unmoved,
And with a heart of joy,
You spoke the wonderful Dharma.
Like the full moon,
Or the pure sun in the sky,
Like Mount Sumeru,
So splendid and marvelous.
I made such a vow,
To fulfil great diligence,
Thus I abandoned my beloved body,
For the benefit of all sentient beings.
I weep for love of the Dharma,
With boundless pure joy,
Yet seeing you destroy your body,
This is why I grieve deeply.'
Those offered by devas and humans,
Of boundless eloquence,
Kṣemadatta responded to the king,
And spoke this gātha:
故名闕身分;
"Not by losing body or hand,
Is one said to be lacking in body;
But if one does not uphold the precepts,
This is called a loss of body.
With this foul-smelling body,
I have made offerings to the Tathāgata,
An inconceivable field of merit,
Like all the stupas of the world.
Even if one fills the cosmos,
Of three thousand worlds with treasure sands,
And offers them to the Buddha, the Bhagavān,
For the sake of bodhi,
Though such offerings are great,
There are offerings even greater,
If one understands the emptiness of dharmas,
Then one can abandon body and life.
Now I speak true words,
O Great King! Please listen well,
Along with this assembly,
Everyone, listen to my words.
If I am truly determined
To attain unsurpassed awakening,
This truth is not in vain,
And let the earth quake in six ways.'
When he spoke these words,
The great earth quaked in six ways,
Seeing this rare event,
The devas rejoiced greatly.
The devas and humans rejoiced,
And generated the bodhicitta,
Countless and inconceivable beings,
All aspired to supreme wisdom.
Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu,
Benefiting all sentient beings,
Peacefully established millions,
In the supreme wisdom.
'By this true Dharma,
I understand that all things lack inherent existence,
These words are certainly true,
And my arm will be restored to its original state.
If this Dharma is truly real,
Then even the name 'Kṣemadatta' does not exist,
Search the ten directions thoroughly,
And nothing will be found, for all is empty.
All dharmas are like echoes,
A sound emerges from within,
But when sought, no sound is found,
Thus one knows all dharmas.
Those who fully realise this,
Have no fear of emptiness,
Their words are true,
And the flames cannot burn them.
All sentient beings of the world,
Devas, humans, yakṣas, and nāgas,
By the power of omniscient wisdom,
Are all led to understand the tranquility of samādhi.
If any humans or devas,
Face the sufferings of the world,
Through [the Buddha's] unshakable authoritative power,
All will swiftly be destroyed.'
As he spoke these words,
His arm returned to its original state,
[Thus was] Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu,
His body adorned with all marks of majesty.

Countless devas,
Dwelling in the pure sky,
With faithful hearts,
Scattered mandārava flowers upon him.

These were extraordinary flowers,
Filling the entire continent of Jambudvīpa.
A koṭi of nayuta of apsarās,
Played music and sang songs.

And those with faithful hearts seeking the path,
Numbered as many as the sands of the Ganges.
Kṣemadatta Bhikṣu,
With wisdom and freedom,
For the sake of the Buddha’s wisdom,
Burned his arm without sorrow.

And the light of his arm illuminates,
Like the fire at the end of a kalpa.

Filling all lands,
From the earth below,
To the heavens above, all gathered.

All precious flowers,

Moreover, all treasures,
Adorned this realm,

As offerings to Kṣemadatta.

Throughout billions of kalpas,
We have practised the bodhisattva path together.'

At that time, seeing those who upheld the precepts,
And the wisdom of Kṣemadatta,
Countless women,
Were all transformed into men.
All the buddhas gave the prophecy that,
Without any doubt,
They will swiftly attain,
The natural wisdom of the world.
